Dear Mother:

I suppose you are wondering why I haven't written lately, and the truth is that I have been kept so busy during our last week at Lachine that I didn't have time to write anyone, and so now I have a lot of mail to catch up on.
We left Lachine about nine oclock thursday night and got up here to St. Thomas about twelve the

the next day. We landed in Toronto about half past six Friday morning and were there for two hours and so I had no time to see the place but it seems to be a lot cleaner than Montreal.
The houses are more modern.
We left Toronto and went as far as London on the Train, then took an electric train into St. Thomas. This is a real large place will all stone buildings.
Our barracks are realy wonderfull. There are six of us in a bay, the floors

are all tile and the bathrooms have showers and bathtubs as well. The only thing I don't like about the place are the bars on the windows. Every window on the station has bars on the outside The reason for them was because this used to be an insane asylum.
There are supposed to be eighteen miles of main corridors on the station a lot of which run underground, some of them are a mile long by themselves with branches off in all all directions. Its very easy

to get lost in here.
Detroit is only about one hundred and sixty miles from here and we are allowed to go there on our forty eights which we get every month. Buffalo is also close by.
The only towns close to here are Port Stanley (5 miles) and London (15 miles) and of course St Thomas which is only a short walk from the station.
This seems to be a great farming country. You can look for miles around and

never see a hill of any size.
I think I will like the place except for the food which is terrible. They wont give us any butter at dinnertime and our sugar is limited. Its altogether different from Lachine where we had all we wanted to eat. I haven't started to work yet, as a matter of fact we haven't anything at all to do until Monday.
Do you know anyone in Detroit whom I may visit when I go there, which I

intend to do as soon as I can. If you get a chance will you send me a couple of more pies or a cake or better still some cookies.
The last stuff you sent me was good except for the lobsters which had spoiled.
This is about all I have to write for now but I will write again soon.
Love
James.
